Choosing Roofing Materials That Suit Your Home

It might not be the most exciting remodeling project ever, but roof repair and replacements are as important as picking the right backsplash color, if not more so. Trust us, a leaking or caved-in roof does not make for a fun time.

There is a broad range of roofing choices available, each having attributes that should serve one or more of your needs. It could be budget considerations, durability, aesthetic, or even all three. Most people probably weigh cost a bit more than the others, and of course, low-cost roofing has shorter longevity compared to higher-priced ones. Roofing contractor Uncle Skeeter’s Roofing, Siding & Gutters agrees that finding the right balance between those is what you hope to achieve here.

For your consideration, here are some of the more common roofing material types and their respective pros and cons.

Asphalt Composition Shingles

Asphalt or composition shingles are some of the most common roofing materials, composed of a fiberglass or cellulose backing, asphalt, mineral fragments. They’re pretty easy to work with and are mostly DIY-friendly for more cost savings. They also have a Class A fire rating (fiberglass-backed) for increased fire protection. The downside to asphalt shingles is that sun exposure and other environmental factors will degrade them over time.

Wood Shingles

This type is usually made out of redwood, cypress, and pine, offering a beautiful, classic look, especially for steeply-pitched roofs. Its visual appeal is compounded by its environment-friendly nature, as it’s made from sustainable materials and naturally decomposes once lifespan is over. However, wood is notoriously flammable, making it a risky choice in areas prone to wildfire.

Metal Shingles / Sheeting

Typically made of steel, aluminum, and copper, this roofing material comes in either sheets or tiles. Unlike the previous two materials, it can last for a very long time, brushes off snow and ice easily, and has no risk of catching fire. For the cons, it’s hard to match with particular architectural styles, requires excellent corrosion protection, and tends to get dented from falling debris (hail, tree limbs).
