Is Your Old Siding Costing You More Money?

temp-post-image

Have you started noticing the siding on your home looking a little weathered, faded or maybe cracked? Beside the fact of not looking very attractive, you are probably losing money also. The following warning signs may be occurring with your old siding that can cost you money now or later.

The Heating and Cooling Costs of Your Home Have Continued to Rise

When siding begins to deteriorate, then small cracks and warping can occur. Visually inspect your home for cracks in siding and warping especially at the seams. If you have a significant amount of breaks and warping it is most likely letting heating and cooling out of your home.

Signs of Exterior Rotting with Mold and Mildew

While inspecting the outside of your home if you notice signs of mold or mildew, then further investigate to see if more damage is occurring. Warping at a seam or visible rotting with mold can be signs of moisture staying beneath the sidings outer layer. If this is happening and not corrected in time, it may cause significant damage to the interior of your home. Wallpaper becoming loose from a wall or paint beginning to peel may be visible signs that the moisture has penetrated through the siding and is now absorbed by the drywall material. Replacing both the siding and the interior drywall can be very costly if not repaired in time.

Your Home is Needing to be Repainted More Frequently

If you need to repaint your siding to get it to its original color, it may be time to look at replacing it. Siding should maintain its original color and shape for approximately eight to ten years. Some of the newer siding materials can retain their color and form for much longer than some of the older materials used on homes. Less painting is an obvious money saver when it comes to maintaining the exterior appearance of your home.

Signs of Dry Rot are Starting to Occur

Dry rot can eat away beneath the surface of the siding leaving the visual appearance of the siding looking intact but deteriorating underneath. Tapping the surface of the siding with the head of a screwdriver can reveal dry rot is occurring underneath. If dry rot is happening, this will lessen the ability of your homes siding to protect your home from the effects of rain, snow, and even insects.

Replacing the siding on your home may not be at the top of your repair list, but the money you will save is undoubtedly a reason to place it at the top of the list. Avoiding potential damage to the interior of your home while saving on energy costs every month will be a big money saver in the long run.
